Please Dont, You Better Not

Two banners are hung in a diagonal on a white wall. The banners have snakes on them and say "You better not" and "Please dont".
A flag is hung on the wall, with the corner flopped over. The back is gold.

This series uses the Gadsden Flag (the dont tread on me flag) but instead represents non-venomous and venomous snakes endemic to Alabama. Many of the non-venomous snakes have taken on the visual appearance that makes us think they might be their venomous cousins. It’s a performance, not unlike the performative nature of the Gadsden Flag.

Installed at Alabama Contemporary Art Center in Spring 2021.
